Secondary Education MAT Program Specifics
Secondary Education MAT students choose either an English Pedagogy or Mathematics Pedagogy Concentration, and upon completion of their program are eligible for full certification to teach grades 9-12 in Rhode Island.
Concentration in English Pedagogy
If you have already completed your bachelor鈥檚 degree in English or a related field, 香港六合论坛 will prepare you for a teaching career in English at the secondary education level. Our faculty are dynamic educators and scholars who place emphasis on social justice and antiracist thought and action in the classroom and community, and we cultivate teachers as writers and inquirers. Upon successful completion of this program, you will be eligible for full certification to teach English in grades 9-12 in Rhode Island. You will also be eligible to pursue endorsement in English as a second language or special education.
Concentration in Mathematical Pedagogy
If you have already completed your bachelor鈥檚 degree in mathematics or a related field, 香港六合论坛 will prepare you for a teaching career in mathematics at the secondary education level. Our faculty are dynamic educators and scholars with expertise in integrating STEM, Common Core standards and other best practices into the classroom. Your coursework will be supplemented by field experiences. Upon successful completion of this program, you will be eligible for full certification to teach mathematics in grades 9-12 in Rhode Island. You will also be eligible to pursue endorsement in English as a second language or special education.

Program/Learning Goals
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- explain the Conceptual Framework of the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, the RIPTS and relevant Rhode Island Department of Education initiatives, and describe their connection and impact on teaching in the public schools
- describe and apply the roles and responsibilities of how reflective teachers think and act
- construct, teach and reflect upon lessons and units that model developmentally appropriate practices consonant with professional teaching standards, including the Conceptual Framework of the FSEHD, SPA Standards and the RIPTS
- select and utilize formal and informal assessment strategies with individuals and groups of students to determine the impact of instruction on learning, to provide feedback and to plan future instruction
- describe the role and purposes of collaborative relationships with family and community, and plan and apply techniques for involving family in the learning process
- describe the importance of lifelong professional development and demonstrate competence in accessing information from relevant professional organizations and journals available for continued professional growth opportunities, with emphasis on using available technology
